Barnsley Development Agency
(BDA) is a partnership organisation of the key players responsible
for the economic development
and regeneration of Barnsley including, Barnsley Metropolitan
Borough Council and Barnsley Chamber of Commerce & Industry
They
combine the skills, experience and contacts of each partner
through a single and dedicated point of contact to assist businesses
thinking of investing in the area.
They can provide guidance to
relocating companies including site information, premises and
financial assistance, company
expansion plans, employee training needs as well as support
for community groups and their activities that will result
in jobs and training opportunities.
The LSC exists to make England better skilled and more competitive.
They
have a single goal: to improve the skills of England's young
people and adults to make sure we have a workforce that
is of world-class standards.
They are responsible for planning
and funding high-quality vocational education and training for
everyone.
Their vision is that by 2010, young people and adults
in England have the knowledge and skills matching the best
in the world
and are part of a fiercely competitive workforce.
One Barnsley brings together the top people from the Police,
PCT, Barnsley College, Local Authority, Chamber, BBEMI, Learning
and Skills Council, Yorkshire Forward, Job Centre Plus, Government
Office(Yorkshire and the Humber) and the Voluntary & Community
sector to tackle problems that face Barnsley.
Individual organisations
can achieve considerable success. However, by standing together
they can build on these successes
to tackle the issues facing our community to improve the quality
of life in Barnsley and make it a place where people want to
live and work.
They manage and operate a diverse portfolio of facilities
from small community recreation centres and civic halls to
large regional facilities such as the Metrodome Leisure Complex
in central Barnsley.
They provide a huge number of traditional
sporting opportunities, from fitness suites to badminton, as
well as catering for a
broad range of leisure pursuits and popular culture that includes
comedy nights and concerts.
They provide an excellent facilities
management (FM) service for all sporting and cultural facilities.
This may include
school sport facilities, leisure centres, civic halls, museums,
libraries, and event and conference facilities.
Barnsley Work and Skills Board
Barnsley Work and Skills Board is the employer led body formed in 2007 as part of the governments agenda for City Strategies. Working in partnership with the similar boards established during 2007 in Rotherham , Doncaster and Sheffield , the Barnsley Work and Skills Board holds a vital remit for the future success of the local economy by promoting skills in the Barnsley workforce and addressing the current levels of worklessness and social exclusion in the borough.

The Work and Skills Board for Barnsley under the direction of the chair John Foster Director of Fosters Bakery is an employer led executive with strong representation from Barnsley’s private sector.
The goals of Barnsley Work and Skills Board include
- Devising the local employment strategy
- To build partnership working with local authorities, employers, Jobcentre Plus, Learning and Skills Councils, and the Regional Development Agency for Yorkshire and the Humber
- Supporting the work of the Local Strategic Partnership One Barnsley.
- Reducing worklessness and social exclusion in the borough
- Defining stretching targets which reflect the degree of performance improvement
- To increase skills in the the local workforce and engage local employers in the UK skills agenda
- To be innovative in changing provision to meet local needs
The board is supported by representatives of the Borough Council, Jobcentre Plus and the Learning and Skills Council.
The Barnsley and Rotherham Chambers are membership organisations
primarily for local businesses - although not exclusively
- anyone with a connection to the areas can join.
The two
Chambers have recently merged to become the biggest Chamber
in Yorkshire. With a combined membership of over
2,200, this enlarged network will bring together a wider
business community, resulting in more inter-trading and business
opportunities.

ranging from basic education

The Barnsley Chronicle is now one of the largest selling
weekly titles in the UK. A quality broadsheet paid-for weekly
newspaper covering the town and its surrounding area with
seven separate editorial editions, the Barnsley Chronicle
has enjoyed many years of circulation growth.
From 1 April 2008, Business Link Yorkshire, will provide support across Yorkshire and the Humber to established businesses and potential entrepreneurs, offering access to impartial advice and expertise to solve business problems, meet business needs and exploit opportunities for growth and development. broadcasts to a survey area of 224,000 adults covering
the Barnsley, Penistone and Dearne Valley areas. It is
listened to by 73,000 people each week.
